Melancholia

It was the ancient term used to indicate a deep interior malaise of the individual, a state of affliction and contemplation, but also an attitude, so to speak, extravagant, outside of customs and habits. We are talking about melancholy, mistakenly considered synonymous with the much better known depression.
Freud, underlining the satisfaction of an intellectual nature caused by suffering, recognized in it a narcissistic neurosis: melancholy arises from the confrontation with an absolute ideal, with respect to which the subject cannot but recognize its nullity.
